We were lucky enough to be invited to a special screening of RRR this past Wednesday at the Theatre at Ace Hotel and let me tell you something, you haven’t truly enjoyed RRR until you’re sitting amongst passionate fans cheering and dancing throughout the film.
Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, RRR is an action-packed and exhilarating film about two freedom fighters. Set in the 1920’s, before the fight for India’s independence began, RRR immerses you in a world that is absolutely spectacular. Sure, at first glance the film is about the two freedom fighters who are each on different journeys to help their people, but at the core, this film is a love story of epic proportions. We see the kind of magnetic friendship that men haven’t fully portrayed on the Hollywood screen before.
Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. lead the film with their charisma and camaraderie which helps you you forget that the film is three hours long. It’s the chemistry between the two of them that force the freedom fighter storyline to fall to the background, bringing focus to the powerful friendship unfolding throughout the film. This film has taken the world by storm and one peak at the visuals will help you understand why; the CGI is to be admired, the dance numbers will take your breath away and the action sequences will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s no surprise that it has already taken a Golden Globe home for Foreign Language Film and that it’s been nominated for an Oscar for original song (though it absolutely deserve one for Best Picture but that’s a rant for another time).
Attending the fan event made me love the film even more than I already did. To watch RRR in a room full of enthusiastic fans gives you a different appreciation for all of the work that was done in order for this film to get to us. It was a night of cheering, a night of dancing and a night I won’t easily forget. If you can experience this film in the theaters, I highly encourage you to do so. RRR is currently playing in theaters.
