Chuchi & Adaliz-Web Series Review | SXSW 2023

We need more stories about friendship!

Based in the Bay Area, Chuchi & Adaliz follows the life of two childhood best friends. When life circumstances pushes them to live together for a while, they slowly realize that maybe they’re not as alike as they once were.

We were lucky enough to get access to watch the pilot episode, which premiered at SXSW this week, and I’m already obsessed. The show starts backwards, we know Chuchi and Adaliz are no longer friends before we get to watch them interact and somehow that format works for this. By the time we see the kind of friendship that the two girls have, you are instantly invested in their story. You’ll spend the entire time hoping that whatever tore them apart is able to be salvaged.

Though at times, some of the performances seem like a parody of a real human being, if you focus on Chuchi and Adaliz you won’t feel the discomfort for too long. It’s really the lead performances by Ashley Soto Paniagua and Dani Adaliz that make the show worth watching. This show serves as a reminder of how important friendships are. It’s light-hearted in a way that feels like you’re hanging out with your best friend on a Friday night.

I’m sure as the episodes progress, the life lessons in these two characters will be endless and full of laughs. Someone pick up this show!!
