Julie’s July Favorites
Here is everything I loved in the month of July.
Gordita Chronicles (HBOMax) – A family show set in the 80’s. When Cucu’s family moves from the Dominic Republic to Miami, her and her family have to figure out a way to navigate America. This show is Taylor-made for the entire family. It is funny, it’s nostalgic and it’s only one season because HBOMax decided to cancel it (*screams into a pillow*).
The Bear (Hulu) – If you enjoyed the film, Uncut Gems, then you will obsessed over The Bear. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, (she says as she swoons over Jeremy Allen White) but it is a fairly accurate look at what it’s like to work in a kitchen. You want to be stressed out? This is the show for you. Jeremy is phenomenal but the ensemble cast is the true heart of this show.
Father of the Bride (HBOMax) – The way I was prepared to hate this movie and yet, I was smiling like a freak the entire time. It’s definitely not perfect; I could have done without the white wedding planner characters and the Latine cast is extremely white. I am very much looking forward to a time in the future when Hollywood stops catering all of their movies for the white gaze. Until then, we can try to enjoy the little bit of representation that we are given.
Arrival (Prime) – Why did it take me so long to watch this film? Amy Adams truly is an absolute gift to this world and it’s about time we all start appreciating her more. Not quite sure how she got me to become emotionally attached to aliens and yet, there were actual tears in my eyes. In an entire movie about aliens, the most unbelievable thing was the fact that Amy Adams fell in love with Jeremy Renner.
Girl In The Picture (Netflix) – I cannot even begin to try to tell you what this documentary is about but I can tell you that you need to watch it immediately. Sharon Marshall deserves to be remembered for the kind and wonderful young woman that she was.
Marry Me (HBOMax) – Our RomCom Queen has done it again. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson are quite adorable in this story of love, just a great watch on a day where life feels overwhelming. Cute, warm feelings are sure to be felt.
If Beale Street Could Talk (Hulu) – Barry Jenkins brings James Baldwin’s novel to life in such a magnificent way. The way Barry plays with light makes for such a beautiful cinematic experience. The chemistry between Kiki Layne and Stephan James is palpable and the entire time you feel like you’re eavesdropping on intimate moments. You will be better for having watched this film.
A Ghost Story (Hulu) – Yes, I know Casey Affleck’s bitch ass is in this film but technically he is only featured in about fifteen minutes (if that). This film is haunting, if you are in need of some introspection and a light existential crisis, then you absolutely need to watch this film.
If you watch anything that I recommend, feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you thought!
