I am once again, coming to you as humbly as I can and asking you to watch a movie I am recommending.
It’s here! What could possibly be my most anticipated movie of 2024 is finally here and now I can tell you about how great it is. When Laura’s (Melissa Barrera) boyfriend breaks up with her after she survives a battle with cancer, she begins to give up on life. Lucky for her, it also happens to be the exact moment when she discovers a monster in her closet. Yes, a literal and you soon find out, quite charming monster (Tommy Dewey). Though it’s initially decided that Laura will have to vacate the premises, Monster doesn’t do roommates, they eventually start realizing that maybe they’re both good for each other and a beautiful relationship begins to blossom.
It’s all in the banter. It’s in the chemistry that is so often missing from today’s RomComs. Tommy Dewey and Melissa Barrera play beautifully off each other and though you meet both of their characters while in the middle of their respective journeys, their interactions feel as genuine as it gets and it helps drive the entire narrative of the movie. Their relationship is a slow burn but the timeline feels perfectly on time with the normal progression of a strong romantic relationship. Though she’s playing against a Monster, who’s growl is often stronger than his bite (though not always and that part IS important), Melissa helps this romance come to life in a magnificent way. Tommy Dewey, while under many layers of prosthetics makes every emotion come through beautifully via his eyes. It truly is a feat to witness the way he emotes so passionately while working under extremely limiting circumstances.
You’re getting a twofer.
Depends on your mood, you could be getting a beautifully hilarious RomCom or you could be getting a movie about female empowerment. HEAR ME OUT.
While Laura does discover Monster in her closet, the discovery does help her uncover the parts of herself that she has suppressed for so many years. As her relationship with him progresses, she also remembers her messy parts, her angry parts and the parts of herself that aren’t always so kind to people. It’s a celebration of all the things we are told to suppress in order to be women who are worth respecting. It helps acknowledge that even our messiest parts are worth loving and I think that’s a beautiful message to go home with at the end of a movie.
Your Monster is in theaters starting October 25th and you’d be doing yourself a favor by watching it.
